On course: An oasis in an otherwise desolate place, Iraan is in solid condition for a small-town course. Regulars take pride in the fact that 20 some-odd San Antonio golfers annually make the pilgrimage to Iraan for a one-week, nonstop golf orgy – proving that the course must be good to warrant a week in a West Texas oil town of 1,300 where amenities consist of the trailer park up the road. The big benefit is the not-so-surprisingly fast pace of play and the tidy club house that sells cold beer for $1.25.
Off course: The golf shop grill is a good place to hang around if friendly locals are present, but don't miss Yulebebak's Bar B Q at the main intersection in town, where the sliced beef sandwich is perfect with a cold, crisp, iced tea. The drive to McCamey is surprisingly scenic, and once you get there, you've got another classic small-town West Texas nine-holer. Take US 190 for 10 miles, then turn right on RR 305.
Of course: Iraan is isolated, but it's worth the trip off I-10 for lonely travelers looking for a golf fix. Nothing quite like the smell of pumpjacks, the sight of gargantuan, clean energy-harnessing windmills and the God-blessed, deep-breath inducing feel of the desolate beauty of West Texas. Plus, knowing anything about small-town West Texas niners, you know that oil is not king. Water is. Iraan pulls county water, giving them an edge over the "competition" when it comes to course condition.
