How to Play In Port A
Jason Stone

If hunger pains call, cruise into town for BBQ, burgers, snacks, or supplies.  Hit a beach shop for cheap trinkets or wander to the Tarpon Inn to gaze at the old photos of glorious days gone-by.  Rent a golf cart with big ole' tires.

Most importantly, always appreciate the beauty of early morning just after sunrise, high-noon with the bright sun blaring the blue sky and shining on the green water, and the late afternoon as the sun sets and the festive night falls upon Mustang Island.  Cruising the beach via jeep pre-sunset with cold beers, good company, and tunes is a great way to people watch and truly absorb yourself in the scene of Port A. It's also a good precursor to nighttime revelry that should be kicked off with margies at La Playa on Beach Street

followed by whatever else you feel like doing.  Both upscale and white-trash joints abound, and live music is easy to find.

An Ideal Day in Port A

  • Coffee to-go before sunrise while you meander around the arena watching the fishing guides get ready for the day.
  • Hit the beach at sunrise with the wife.  She walks to keep her firm form in shape.  You fish in the surf with a speck rig and crush trout and ladyfish.
  • The family wanders down around 10 AM with breakfast tacos and beach toys.  Quality family time ensues prior to heading off for golf at Newport Dunes just before noon.  (Tip: Hit the convenience store on the way for beef jerky, water, and mosquito sauce.  Keep lunch light and stay hydrated before afternoon/evening booze time).
  • Bribe Jim Brown to play a few holes with you so you can enjoy his presence and learn about the course.  Avoid the gunch, hit every fairway and green, and be thankful for every moment you spend on the incredible course.
  • Hit the convenience store again on the way home for a twelver of Sol, ice, and the best limes you'll ever buy in Texas.
  • Roll into the rental house for more family time by the pool and a little down-time to prepare for the charms of a Port A evening (see above).
If babysitters or family are available to manage the kids, push it late night to Sharkey's for pool, shots, smokes, and more people watching.
  • Do it all over again the next day.
