There are so many things I love about golf. I am fortunate to have a platform like Texas Golfer Magazine to write about them. Obviously nothing beats a day on the course with great friends who play together weekly or those rare occasions when we put together a foursome with friends we just don’t see often enough. Recently I was thinking about the casual rounds where you show up at the club or in my case the local muni and are paired with a total stranger. Inevitably there is something strange about their wardrobe and often their swing, even stranger! Yet by the end of the day you have learned so much about their life and aspects about how they choose to live it. That in itself is an article I will reserve for another day. Needless to say the majority of really good friends I have made in the last 20 years began on the number one tee box somewhere and for that I am grateful for the great game of golf.
One of the other things I enjoy about golf are the illusions I have while watching the final day of one of Golf’s Majors. Do you ever get the urge right in the middle of the round to get out to the course thinking you have observed something from one of those flat-belly twenty something’s that is going to finally help you break 80?
On more than one occasion that enthusiasm and excitement has me rushing off to Memorial Park where I quickly double bogey the 1 st hole and reality sets in. In some ways, that mirrors the journey we have been on with Texas Golfer Magazine. About four years ago I purchased Texas Golfer Magazine with great enthusiasm and excitement. I must say we have double bogeyed on more than one occasion over the last four years.
Like golf, there are so many decisions, judgments, and possible hazards in the course of a day that can throw us off our game. And yet we also get to start over and continue to try and improve. With those thoughts in mind, let me share with you a few changes at Texas Golfer we are excited about.
New look
The first thing I am sure you will notice is our new four color glossy look. After 24 years of the tabloid size publication we are completely thrilled to be making the change. I think it is safe to day that the colorful game of golf deserves this and who better to bring it you than Texas Gofer Magazine.
New Editor
Once you get beyond the cover, the real heart and soul of any magazine is the editor. You have likely noticed over the last two months the fantastic insight brought by Jason Stone. Jason’s colorful style would last about an hour covering the Master’s but I think he has brought a much needed brilliance to our publication. So while we may still double bogey along the way, I can assure you it will never be boring!
Texas Club Champion & Texas Golfer Junior Amateur Tournament
As you mature in life you begin to think about your legacy. I would like to think that as a steward of this magazine we might utilize our resources to do a better job of promoting amateur and junior golf. In the next few months along with our partner clubs, Comanche Trace, Horseshoe Bay, The Bridges, Cascades, Moody Gardens and Newport Dunes. We will be hosting the first ever Texas Club Championship.
In June of 09 we will host the largest single day event for Junior’s in the history of the great state. Look for more information in next month’s edition.
Charity Tournaments
In the coming months we will begin to assist local charities with their golf tournaments. This partnership will include numerous features that will include numerous features that will increase participation, provide exposure as well as generate additional funds for charities that we are fortunate to work with.
Texas Golfer Travel
You will notice that we now have our own travel division. Texas Golfer Travel will put special packages together in select golfing destinations around the world. Unlike other agencies, we will only offer golf related travel and only to destinations that we have an expertise in. So the next time you want to put a foursome or group together call to Moriah Sanchez at 281-748-1622 or contact her by e-mail at
moriahsanchez@hotmail.com
, pack your bags and we will guarantee your satisfaction as well as cover your trip in the magazine! So what goes on in Vegas may not stay in Vegas!
Travel Section
We will also launch a travel section in next month’s edition. This 16 page feature will be designed to pull out from the magazine and will provide you with great destinations that will surely wet the appetite for a golf vacation!
We Golf
Finally, a much needed addition that will highlight women in golf. Let’s face it we all enjoy the cart girls, but is this really what women golfers are bringing to the game? Obviously not, and we will be focusing on one of the fastest growing segments of the game! Somewhere between Lorena Ochoa and the cart girl, these are some great stories.
SO with the same enthusiasm as spending a Sunday watching The Masters, lets get started. I think we will have more birdies in our future than bogey’s!
