Notebook-September 2008

Don’t go left. Don’t go right. Don’t go long. Don’t go short,” says Robert ‘Radio’ Regney, P.G .A. Head Golf Professional at The Westin Resort & Spa in Los Cabos, Mexico, as he lets loose with one of his many inspirational comments to try and give guests a feel for a hole. Radio is the concierge extraordinaire for a genius relationship the resort maintains with the spectacular Cabo Del Sol Golf Course, and you’ll never enjoy a golf experience more than playing a round with this gentleman.

His preparatory comments pertained to the Nicklaus Ocean Course No. 13 par-3 hole, a 213 yard monster that flies over gnarly, cactus-infested Baja California desert terrain. And while thirteen is one of many truly unbelievable holes that comprise one of the best golf courses you’ll ever play in your life, it doesn’t come close to the ridiculously spectacular pair of finishing holes. The par-3 17th plays over an inlet of rugged coastline where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean, and it’s followed by the long par-4 18th that bends right along the ocean and his claimed by the Bear as “one of the finest finishing holes in all of golf.”

Don’t wait. Book your travel now. Head south as soon as possible and experience one of the truly great golf vacations in the world. Stay at the Westin or the Sheraton Hacienda Del Mar Resort & Spa (pictured here behind No. 7). Swim in the cold, refreshing Pacific waves. Play golf at the Cabo Del Sol Desert Course. Drink tequila with West Texas oil-men who frequent the bars after angling for marlin. Read a book and lounge in the white sand while sipping ice-cold Dos Equis from green cans pulled from iced buckets sloshed with sand and limes. Roll into town for lunch with mariachis on the beach before taking a boat taxi to Los Arcos and shopping for trinkets by the marina. Drink fine Mexican wine while partaking of Coconut Broiled Shrimp with Lobster Risotto and Shiitake Mushrooms at one of the many first-class resort restaurants. Drop trou and get oiled up at the spa by a cute Senorita named Rosalba who barely speaks English but knows how to give a world-class massage. The list of exciting activities for the traveling golfman is endless, and as they say, “When you cross that border, you in a whole nother’ country!”
