San Antonio’s Windcrest Golf
Club Now Open to the Public
Since its opening in 1964, Windcrest Golf Club has been on the short list of the San Antonio area’s top private layouts. In a nod to today’s economic challenges, the venerable facility opened its course to outside play in 2010, giving players who longed to tee it up on the tree-lined track a chance to do so.
The nine-hole course, which plays to a par-34 over 2,485 yards from the longest setup, is tight in some spots with a traditional layout that calls for a variety of different shots. Narrow fairways and elevated greens protected by bunkers require sharp short game skills and accurate placement off the tees. Water hazards also come into play on two holes.
With four sets of tees, the golf course is perfect for juniors and beginners who want some practice or avid golfers wanting a quick round. One of the most appealing things about Windcrest is that it doesn't get especially crowded on weekends, meaning tee times are rarely required.
Windcrest is a compact track tucked inside a compact community. “This course teaches you to hit the ball straight and to work on your short game,” said Carlo Grever, the course’s director of golf. “You think because it’s short, it’s going to be easy. But it’s a little harder than you think.”
“Everything here is the same—this place has never changed,” said Grever, who grew up in a house near the course. “Windcrest was, at one time, very private and hard to get on to. It's an encouragement that golfers can come over and see it."
